How To Remove A Door Knob In Record Time

Removing a door knob is easy. One of the most important keys is having the right tools. Usually door knobs are held in place by a few screws and the interlocking nature of the mechanism. One or two types of screwdrivers and a thin chisel is generally all that is needed. If you take a few moments to look carefully at the look you will be able to identify the type and number of screws that are holding the lock in place. Then you can understand how to remove a door knob quickly and easily.

Learning how to remove a door knob is not rocket science. Just about anyone can do it. All it takes is a plan of action, a few tools, patience and basic intelligence. Take a look at the door knob. Does it have Phillips head screws, flathead screws or both holding it in place? Once you have identified the type of screws you know which screwdrivers you need. Before you begin removing the screws, get a plate or a plastic bowl in which to place the parts you are about to remove so they will not become lost or get underfoot.

In order to remove the lock you first have to take off the trim which holds it to the door. Identify the type of screws holding the plate in place. Grab the appropriate screwdriver and begin. Remember turning the screw to the left loosens it and turning it to the right tightens it. As you remove the screws be sure to place them into the container so you can keep track of them. The plate is commonly held by screws on both sides of the door. Be sure to remove all of them. Sometimes the plates are held in place with glue as well. Carefully use the thin chisel to pry it off the door.

Some door knobs are attached to the plates. This means once you have removed the screws holding the plate you may be able to slide the doorknob right out. Some locks have two additional long screws holding the lock in place. If your lock does, identify whether it is a Phillips head or a flat head, grab the appropriate screwdriver, remove the screws and slide the doorknob out. Be sure to fit the parts of the doorknob back together. It can serve as a visual reference when you are installing the new lock.

Once the doorknobs have been removed, you now can easily remove the bolt. The bolt is the tongue-like piece of metal which slide into the wall and keeps the door closed. Some bolts are held in place by screws as well. Identify their type and carefully remove them. The bolt should easily slide out. Place it in the container with the other parts. All that's left is for you to remove the strike plate. Strike plates are usually slightly recessed and screwed into the door post. Remove the screws holding it in place and you are done.

Learning how to remove a door knob is simple. If you take your time and use the right tools you should be able to do it in a few minutes. Soon friends and family might be asking if you went to college to learn how to remove a door knob.
